For the sake of those that don’t know, revoking a banking license means to take away the bank’s legal authorization to operate as a bank.
It’s like telling the bank “sorry, you can’t do banking business anymore”. And this action is usually taken when a bank fails to meet certain requirements or if it engages in unlawful activities. It is a very serious consequence for the bank and is usually taken by regulatory authorities.
Mandate Of The CBN.
The mandate of the CBN are as follows:
- Issues legal tender currency to Nigeria.
- Ensure monetary and price stability.
- Promote a sound financial system in Nigeria.
- Maintain external reserves to safeguard the international value of the legal tender currency.
- Act as banker and provide economic and financial advice to the federal government.
Why Did CBN Revoke The Banking License Of Heritage Bank.
The CBN in a press release, said; this action became necessary due to Heritage Bank’s breach of Section 12 (1) of BOFIA, 2020. The Board and Management of the bank have not been able to improve the bank’s financial performance, a situation which constitutes a threat to financial stability. This follows a perios during which CBN engaged with the bank and prescribed various supervisory steps intended to stem the decline. Regrettably, the bank has continued to suffer and has no reasonable prospects of recovery, thereby making the revocation of the license the next necessary step.
The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is hereby appointed as the Liquidator of the bank in accordance with Section 12 (2) of BOFIA, 2020.
To cut the long story short, The CBN has revoked the banking license of Heritage Bank due to financial instability, appointing the NDIC as liquidator. This action aims to uphold financial system stability, ensuring public confidence and safety.
